Risk of stroke should be Prevented From Small

Risk of stroke should be Prevented From Small - Stroke can be regarded as one bugbear for many people, as well as heart disease and diabetes. But unfortunately not many people know how to prevent the disease coming. Yet according to a new study from the U.S., the risk of stroke can be prevented since childhood. How so?

In this study, researchers looked at 25,500 people who once lived in the stroke belt region in the United States. Stroke Belt is a term that is intended for a number of states in the southeastern U.S. that have a high incidence rate of stroke.

After making observations for six years, reported there were 615 participants who had a stroke. In addition, the researchers also concluded that people living in the stroke belt at any age tend to have a high risk of stroke. "Even people living in the stroke belt region since childhood seems a potentially greater risk of developing a stroke," said Howard.

People living in the stroke belt region from birth to the age of 12 years or when aged between 13-18 years 22 percent higher risk of stroke than those who spent her childhood in the other regions. These findings remained consistent even though the researchers took into account other factors that might affect a person's risk of stroke such as age, race and gender.

Even people who grew up outside the stroke belt but moved to this area when the adults are also known to high risk of stroke than people living in other regions, although the risk is not as high as people living in the stroke belt region since childhood and then moved to another state when mature.

Moreover, when the researchers took into account other factors thought to influence the risk of stroke such as diabetes and smoking habits, they also found a higher risk of strokes visible only to people living in the stroke belt region as a teenager.

"These findings suggest that if we intend to prevent stroke in adults, we should not wait until the risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes appeared because it will be too late. Since we need to start small," said researcher Virginia Howard, an expert on stroke epidemiology from the Birmingham School of Public Health, University of Alabama, USA.

"But we do not know for sure why the people living in the stroke belt region during the first years of life are more at risk of stroke. We suspect this is because childhood and adolescence is the time when many habits that one has begun to take shape, "said Howard as quoted by FoxNews, Sunday (28/04/2013).

"In this period the diet was first formed, the first time you decide to smoke or not, the first time you decide to be active or not. Fact decisions that will shape the course of the body's systems, which in turn will increase the risk of stroke when moving adults, "he continued.

But Howard stressed although this study uses a specific geographic restrictions as the stroke belt region, the actual findings are applicable to the lifestyle of every person wherever they live.

"What should be emphasized is the application of a healthy lifestyle such as regular physical activity, adopt a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of driving the emergence of stroke risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes," he concluded.

The study has been published in the journal Neurology.
